Navigating the Mobile Landscape

The current state of mobile widget development.

Synopsis

The mobile handset is the true personal computer: never shared, always on hand, and hyperlocal. The increasing ubiquity of mobile data plans and adoption by consumers has created an entirely new class of mobile widget content optimized for quick data access on a small screen with limited navigation options. This session will introduce you to the current state of mobile content, widgets, and the service carriers who broker access to your data.

A goal of mobile widgets is to provide end users with increased personalization, creating an enhanced experience on the mobile Internet. Since mobile widgets can be delivered directly to the user's device with one click access, increased data usage of the mobile Internet will continue to be realized resulting in new revenue streams for all members of the wireless value chain. Widgets not only increase the personalization properties of the mobile Internet for the end user, but they also make the Web experience more optimized, which in turn drives adoption.

Kevin Hunter will address the opportunities that both operators and publishers have in developing and deploying mobile widgets that can be accessed through a mobile experience. Operators specifically can benefit from a solution that allows them to offer compelling Internet content and information to all devices on their network. Driving usage of mobile Internet services through increased personalization greatly increases monetization opportunities for the operator as well as content providers, publishers and brands.

Qualcomm recently announced Plaza, a mobile widget framework based on Web standards and tools such as HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. Plaza builds upon the broad success of the BREW application platform updated for today's mobile data environment. Qualcomm has deep experience developing software experiences across multiple devices while negotiating the concerns of wireless carriers, handset manufacturers, developers, and publishers.
